The History of IBD

Beer Day is for celebrating the craft of brewing. Additionally, it is a way of showing appreciation to everyone who helped make beer. Bartenders and other beer industry experts’ joy instantly improved the day. Around 1716, India imported two different types of ale from England.

This wonderful beverage has a history that almost all cultures can trace back. Mesopotamia and ancient Babylon are where the passion for brewing beer first appears in human history. Archaeologists have found pottery containers still sticky with beer residue from 3400 B.C. and clay tablets with instructions for beer from 4300 B.C.

Beer was a mainstay of the diet of everyone in ancient Egypt, including pharaohs, commoners, priests, and even young children. In the Middle Ages, Christian monks began brewing beer and popularized hops, but before that, beer brewing used local flavorings such as dates and olive oils. 

In contemporary brewing, hops, herbs, or fruits still flavor beer. Whether mega, micro, or craft, beer brewing is a specialized industry that relies on tried-and-true procedures that have painstakingly improved over centuries.

Jesse Avshalomov and a few friends were having drinks and chatting back in August 2007 in the Californian seaside community of Santa Cruz. He was undoubtedly considering our shared affinity for beer. When he first established International Beer Day, he did so for the following reasons:

How International Beer Day is Celebrated Around the World

It started in California but has since spread like wildfire, celebrated in 87 countries and six continents last year. 5 August was the first day to celebrate International Beer Day 2007.

The United States of America celebrates IBD annually on the first Friday of August. Different states where various beer brands are available to organize IBD. In Los Angeles, there is the L.A. Beer Fest which is a two-day event that features over 200 beers. There are also beer pong tournaments, eating contests, and live music.

Mexico also celebrates this day with various festivities in different parts of the country. In Puerto Vallarta, for example, there is a Cerveza Festival where different types of beer are available. There are also live music and folkloric dance performances.

Brazil celebrates IBD with various events that take place in different cities. In Rio de Janeiro, for example, there is the Copacabana Beer Festival which features over 100 brands of beer. There are also live music performances and D.J. sets.

Italians celebrate IBD with aperitivo, a pre-dinner drink usually served with snacks. Aperitivo hour usually starts around 6 pm and goes on until 8 pm. Different bars and restaurants offer special discounts on beer during this time.

Germany observes IBD with a variety of events that occur in various places. For instance, Oktoberfest is a two-week celebration with food, beer, and live music in Munich.

Australia also celebrates IBD with various events in different cities. In Sydney, for example, there is the Sydney Craft Beer Week which is a 10-day event that features over 100 events. There are also beer tastings, food trucks, and live music.

Since its inception in 2007, International Beer Day has given rise to many different traditions worldwide. Perhaps the most popular is the “Beer Mile,” where participants chug a beer, run a quarter-mile, then chug another beer, and so on. 

The world record for the Beer Mile is currently held by American Lewis Kent, with a time of 4:47.17. In 2015, on the day that he set the record, he was also working as a server in a restaurant.

Other participants tried to break records for the most beer cans opened in a minute or the most beer bottles smashed over their heads. Some people spend the day visiting different bars and trying as many beers as possible.

In many cities, there are pub crawls, where participants visit a series of different bars in one night. This is often combined with a “scavenger hunt,” where people have to find certain items or perform tasks to get a stamp on their “passport.”
