The Origins of Chocolate Mousse

Chocolate mousse has existed since the 18th century, although its exact origin is still unknown. It originated in France, with chocolate mousse often being served to guests in fine-dining restaurants.

The initial documented evidence of chocolate mousse in the United States can be traced back to an exhibition in New York City in 1892. Later on, the recipe for this delightful treat featured in a part of the “Housekeepers Column” across editions of the Boston Globe beginning in 1897.

Interestingly enough, if you followed these instructions, your dish would have resembled more closely with a pudding instead of its modern-day fluffy interpretation! When egg whites, distinct from the yellow yolks, were added to this recipe, it gained its unique light creaminess.

Crafting mousse was a skillful art form as one had to manually whisk and beat for an extended time to obtain the proper texture and consistency. Although with the introduction of electric mixers creating sublime mousses instantly became more common.
